ACNE SCARS Acne scars are more challenging to resolve. The whole process may take 2 or 3 stages. The patient has to be off Accutane for a minimum of 6 months. There is usually a special skin care program that prepares the skin for laser therapy. The edges of the scars are reduced then the whole face is given a Micro-Laser Peel. Recovery time is just 2-3 days and the results will continue to improve for several months. HOW CAN ACNE SCARS BE TREATED? Scarring is a common and devastating complication of severe acne or cystic acne. The appearance of these scars can often be modified to make them less apparent. Types of acne scars include: Atrophic Scars These are the most common type of scars and appear as 'defects' in the skin (ice pick scars). Common treatments include Thermage and 1.319µm laser, causing Collagen re-modeling and fibroblast activation. This enhances scar healing and a reduction in the scar size. Hypertropic Scars These scars are visible as thickened areas on the skin due to overgrowth of fibrous scar tissue. Medication generally takes the form of various agents injected into the scar to help flatten the scar. Healing is then modified with the Thermascan 1.319µm laser. Chemical peels or creams containing Hydroquinone and/or Kojic acid can also be used to correct irregular pigmentation that results from acne and worsens the appearance of acne scars. Irregular Pigmentation Inflamation can lead to irregular pigmentation of the skin leaving some areas lighter and other areas darker than the surrounding skin. Acne Treatments Back |
