Scarring is a common and devastating complication of severe acne or cystic acne. The appearance of these scars can often be modified to make them less apparent. Types of acne scars include:
Atrophic scars
These are the most common type of scars and appear as “defects” in the skin (ice pick scars). Common treatments include Thermage and 1.319µm laser, causing Collagen re-modeling and fibroblast activation. This enhances scar healing and a reduction in the scar size.
Hypertrophic scars
These scars are visible as thickened areas on the skin due to overgrowth of fibrous scar tissue. Medication generally takes the form of various agents injected into the scar to help flatten the scar. Healing is then modified with the ThermascanTM 1.319µm laser. Chemical peels or creams containing Hydroquinone and/or Kojic acid can also be used to correct irregular pigmentation that results from acne and worsens the appearance of acne scars.
Irregular pigmentation
Inflammation can lead to irregular pigmentation of the skin leaving some areas lighter and other areas darker than the surrounding skin.
