ACNE TREATMENTS

Acne is a medical skin condition that can be painful and have devastating effects on the patient and their skin

  • Medical Management

It is always be to consult with a physician to discuss the best approach in managing your acne breakout. There are a number of options in treating acne but often the most effective first step is through prescribed medication. After a thorough examination, your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medication to manage the acne breakout.

  • Profile™ Thermascan™ 1.319µm Laser

The laser energy delivered by this technology will heat the target area in the skin containing the sebaceous glands (oil glands). This reduces oil production leading to fewer acne lesions or outbreaks. It is also believed that the raised temperature reduces bacterial counts in the skin, which helps to reduce the occurence of acne lesion.

The cooling plate and computerized scanner allows quick treatments with specific temperature reaching the target area without causing thermal damage to the superficial layers. A minimum of eight treaments twice a week is recommended.

  • Photo Rejuvenation (Intense Pulsed Light Therapy - IPL) and Blu-U

In the treatment of acne, a series of appointments that frequently combine IPL (intense pulse light) and Blu-U (blue light) may be recommended as part of a treatment plan. Depending on the severity of acne, a drug called Levulan ALA may be applied before the application of blue light. This treatment kills bacteria that cause acne. After thoroughly examining the skin, the consulting physician will determine the type and number of treatments.

  • Microdermabrasion

Pimples occur when excess skin oil and flaking skin plug the opening of a hair folicle and create the ideal environment for acne bacteria to grow. This procedure involves spraying exfoliating crystals onto the skin and vacuuming them up. Almost immediately, rough, dry or scaly skin begins to disappear. As the outer skin is sloughed away, much of the keratin/dead skin cells are removed and the acne can be reduced. Six to eight treatments every two weeks is recommended.

  • Chemical Peels

Glycolic peels are the best known facial peels. The primary ingredient in a Glycolic peel is a natural alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane. During treatment Glycolic solution is applied to the face. Special attention is given to areas where pigmentation is caused by acne. The solution is left on the skin for a prescribed length of time, at the end of which is neutralized and removed. Following treatment the pigmentation begins to fade; the skin appears smoother and more vibrant. Six to eight treatments every two weeks is recommended.
