SKIN LASER SURGERY
LASER RESURFACING
Laser resurfacing is still the gold standard for moderate to severely sun damaged and wrinkled skin. It is the only treatment that will improve the wrinkles around the mouth. The laser emits an intense beam of energy that heats and vaporizes tissue instantaneously. The heat tightens Collagen and Elastin. Once the outer layer of the skin has been removed, the new skin beneath is softer, smoother with a more youthful appearance. Recovery is usually two weeks and the initial redness disappears completely in about 2-3 months.
MICRO LASER PEEL™
We have seen successful results from laser resurfacing for a number of years but many patients, because of their busy active lifestyles, cannot accommodate the extended recovery period. Patients undergoing Micro Laser Peel can experience improvement in sun-damaged skin with only a topical anaesthetic cream and a recovery time of 3-5 days. This procedure can be used to treat the face and neck, chest, hands, and other body parts. Also very effective in treating acne scars.
HOW IS MICRO LASER PEEL DIFFERENT FROM MICRODERMABRASION?
Microdermabrasion only removes the outer layer of the skin (10 microns). Micro Laser Peel is a minimal to full epidermal peel (20-50 microns). It is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and deeper peels (resurfacing).
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
Smoother, healthier, more vibrant skin will be noticed 3-5 days after the procedure. You will also notice an improvement in skin texture and tightness. Patients may choose to have an additional Micro Laser Peel as early as 3-4 months after the initial procedure. In order to protect your newly formed skin, it is very important to use adequate sun protection after this procedure. Maintenance with proper skin care is always essential. Our clinical estheticians will gladly assist you if you have any questions in this regard.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?
A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area that is to be treated 45-60 minutes prior to the procedure. A mild analgesic will be provided as well as a mild sedative if the patient wishes to have one. We will advise you to arrange transportation home if you wish to receive a sedative.
Patients suffering from recurrent cold sores will be given an antiviral agent to prevent an outbreak. The topical anaesthetic will be cleaned off the face prior to the treatment to ensure an even result. During the treatment you might experience a mild sensation of heat.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER TREATMENT?
Immediately after the procedure you can apply an ice pack for a few minutes. An ointment will be applied after treatment to act as a barrier to keep air away from the skin while you grow new Epithelium. Ointment will be provided for you to take home to apply for the next 2 days.
The healing process varies from patient to patient but generally takes 3-5 days. It will feel like you have a bad sunburn for the first day. You will have minor peeling and itchiness over the next 2 days. By day #3 the redness will begin to fade. You can start using your regular moisturizer after 2 days and apply makeup after 3 days. It is recommended that you use a mineral make-up (it covers redness and is not a base for bacteria growth). Ask our clinical estheticians about the Jane Iredale mineral make-up line available to our patients at the Centre.
