WHAT IS LIPO-SCULPTURE?

Lipo-Sculpture is the art of sculpting (by siphoning away fat cells) areas of the body that have disproportionate volumes of fat; to create a more proportioned body shape. The skin in the area where the fat is removed shrinks and flattens and the fat cells are gone forever. Lipo-Sculpture is performed to remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from the body. A small micro-cannula is inserted through a tiny incision placed in an inconspicuous location and removes fat by a high-pressure vacuum.

WHAT IS THE TUMESCENT TECHNIQUE?

Tumescent Lipo-Sculpture, introduced in 1997, is a safe method of numbing the fat by infusing large volumes of saline solution, local anaesthetic, and adrenaline into the fatty area being treated. The solution mixes with the fat, liquefying it. This allows the surgeon to sculpt the area with ease and suction away the unwanted fatty deposits to reveal more attractive contours. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Using the smallest micro-instruments, Lipo-Sculpture is a safe and simple procedure that reshapes your body.  The most frequent areas treated by Lipo-Sculpture, in men are the ‘love handles’, breasts, abdomen, and double chin. In women they include: inner and outer thighs, hips, buttocks, back and waist-line, stomach, knees, lower leg, cheeks and double chins. Some women elect to use their own fat through Lipo-Augmentation to replace facial (lips and cheeks) contours lost through aging.

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES?

Individuals already on an exercise program and of normal body weight are considered ideal for this cosmetic surgery procedure. However, patients can be moderately overweight and still be candidates for Lipo-Sculpture if they have areas that are out of proportion with the rest of the body, such as a protruding abdomen. The most important thing is that patients have realistic expectations of what they can achieve. Age, by itself, is not a significant factor. Many patients who are in their 50’s and 60’s have been delighted with the outcome.

HOW WILL MY SKIN LOOK AFTER SURGERY?

One of the most impressive aspects of this technique is that the skin quality is not altered by the micro-cannulas. The skin is a dynamic organ which has elasticity and, in most cases, shrinks to accommodate the new body contour. Therefore, there is no need to remove excess skin with plastic surgery. Also keep in mind that Lipo-Sculpture is not a treatment for cellulite, although a number of patients do notice an improvement in the appearance of cellulite after the fat cells are moved.

WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?

One or two small stitches might be required to close the tiny incisions. To aid healing, you will wear a snug elastic garment over the treated areas for few weeks. You will go home after the procedure and rest for a few hours, after which you may increase your activity as much as can be tolerated. Tylenol™ Extra Strength is all that is required to manage discomfort, meaning there are no excessive drug related costs of this cosmetic surgery. You may resume normal activity after 3-5 days. The bruising disappears in 10-14 days. Patients are encouraged to go for a walk within 24 hours after surgery and modified exercise may begin in 10 days.

IS THE FAT REMOVAL PERMANENT?

Yes! It seems that, after puberty, we do not create new fat cells. When you gain weight, you expand the fat cells that you already have. Tumescent Lipo-Sculpture permanently removes fat cells to improve the body’s contour. Should you gain weight after a Lipo-Sculpture procedure in Calgary, the remaining fat cells will show weight gain. The localized fatty deposits that existed prior to Lipo-Sculpture can no longer balloon out of proportion to the surrounding areas. Some female patients have noticed an increase in breast size after Lipo-Sculpture.
